Q

How do I get my sonogram to you?

A

There are several options available to you.

1.  Make a copy of your sonogram.   This is the most desirable option to get us your sonogram.  Take your sonogram to a local print shop (e.g., Kinko's) and have them make a same size copy on high quality glossy photo paper.  The higher the printer resolution the better.  A minimum printer resolution should be 300 dpi (dots per inch).  Cost for a copy on glossy photo paper at a local print shop should cost somewhere between one ($1) and three ($3) U.S. dollars.   Please send the copy in protective packaging that will not allow the copy to fold or crease and mail to the address below;  A 50% deposit is require at time of ordering.

2.  Scan your sonogram.  The average sonogram is 4" by 3" and should be scanned at a resolution of 300 dpi (dots per inch).  This will produce a digital file of approximately 3.5Megabytes, if cropped to the border of the sonogram.  The preferred format of the digital image should be in TIFF (Tagged Image Format) format.  The TIFF format is a standard image format in most all scanning software.

If you do not have or scanner or have access to a scanner, some print shops now have equipment available to do this (e.g., Kinko's).  They can scan and e-mail for you, or put the digital image on a 3 1/2" floppy disk.      *Note:  If the only option available is to put the scanned image on a 3 1/2" floppy disk, scan the image at 150 dpi and TIFF format.  This will produce a digital file of approximately 0.8Megabytes (800,000 bytes) which will fit on any standard 3 1/2" floppy disk.  Scanned image resolution of 300 dpi is preferable, but 150 dpi is acceptable.

3.  Mail us your sonogram.  This is the least desirable method to get us your sonogram.  If you choose to send us your original sonogram, we cannot be held liable or responsible for any damage or loss.  Upon receipt of original sonogram, we will immediately scan the sonogram and mail it back to you as quickly as possible.  Please mail to the address below.  A 50% deposit is require at time of ordering.

Q

What if my sonogram is on video tape?

A

Yes, we can produce portraits from VHS and 8mm video tape.  The difficult part is getting the "right" image to start with.  Most video taped sonograms have some kind of measurement of time on them. If this is the case, please watch the video and write down the time(s), or time period(s), you like.  If there is no time measurement on the video, at least try and describe the areas of the video you would prefer.  Either way, we can make the still images viewable to you on a password protected area of our site for you to choose the one(s) you like best.

1.  Make a copy of your video and mail to the address below.  We will notify you via email and promptly mail it back to as soon as possible.  A 50% deposit is require at time of ordering.

2. Send us your video. If you choose to send us your original video, we cannot be held liable or responsible for any damage or loss.  Upon receipt of video, we will notify you via email and immediately start the process of getting still images for you to view and choose.  Once you have decided on an image, we will mail it back to you as quickly as possible.  A 50% deposit is require at time of ordering.

Q

What exactly is gicleé ?

A

Gicleé is a French word meaning "to squirt or spurt." The Gicleé printers squirts approximately 4 million microscopic droplets of ink, per second, onto various media types. The four Gicleé printing colors (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) can produce up to 16 million colors.

An ArtInUtero gicleé begins as an image, or a copy, of your sonogram.  It is scanned to the desired resolution resulting in a digital file which is then cleaned of blemishes or unwanted peripheral information and sized to your specifications.  From here, our artist digitally paints and textures the electronic file to create a one-of-a-kind, portrait.  Each ArtInUtero portrait is signed by the artist and a personalized certificate is affixed to the back (a certificatel is included with the portrait when shipped unframed).   Each certificate contains a copy of the original sonogram and your personal message and/or statistics if the baby is already born.  See an example of the certificate here.

Q

Do you have any suggestions on hanging my framed portrait?

A

Now that you have your custom framed portrait in hand, it is time to hang it properly to maximize enjoyment for the longest time possible. Properly hung artwork combines concern for the safety of the artwork with the aesthetic concerns of lighting and visual balance within the room.

Hang your portrait at the eye-level of the average person. If you are hanging the portrait in a room where more time is spent seated than standing, "eye-level" should be lower.

Hang smaller, more detailed pieces in small spaces such as hallways and corridors, where impact is less important than content, and the art can be enjoyed up close and personal.  Larger, "atmospheric" pieces require more room for the viewer to stand back and enjoy - hang these pieces opposite the entrance to a room or at the end of a corridor.

Use two hooks to hang anything larger than 8" X 10".  When determining where to put the hooks, use a carpenter's level to ensure that the picture will hang straight. This will help distribute the picture's weight more evenly, and your portrait will hang straight without constant vigilance
